UP member candidate killed in attack by rivals in Hatiya

Our CorrespondentNOAKHALI: A union parishad member candidate in Hatiya upazila of the district was hacked to death and four others were injured in an attack by their rivals on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Jubayer Hossain, 44, an Awami League backed member candidate of ward 5 in Sonadia union parishad election.

Injured Mehedi Hasan Jibon, 21, Md Irak, 34, Md Raju, 31, and Md Rahim, 37, were admitted to the upazila health complex.

Of them, condition of Md Irak was stated ‘to be critical’ as tendons of his legs were severed.

All the injured are residents of Sonadia union and supporters of AL chairman candidate Mehedi Hasan.

Locals said UP chairman Nurul Islam distributed rice at Char Chenga Bazar this morning.

At that time, some people alleged irregularities in rice distribution. Chairman’s supporters then obstructed them.

After few minutes, a group of chairman’s followers equipped with lethal weapons launched attack on the bazar and drove away AL candidate’s supporters by beating them.

The attackers also asked Jubayer to leave the place. But, he did not go.

The terrorists first shot Jubayer and cut off tendons of his both legs, leaving him critically inured.

Jubayer was rushed to the health complex where doctors declared him dead.

On information, additional police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Hatiya police station officer-in-charge (OC) M Abul Khayer said two suspects were detained. Police hunt is on to nab the other accused.
