A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Hefazat-e-Islam central leader and former MP from Sunamganj-3 constituency Advocate Maulana Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury from his Bonkalapara residence in Sylhet early Friday.

Shahinur Pasha was the legal affairs secretary of Hefazat’s recently abolished central committee and vice-president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh.

According to Bonkalapara Abbasi Jam-e-Masjid committee secretary Abdul Mukit, some people “arrested” him from his residence around 12:45am.

Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khan Md Moinul Zakir said that Shahinur Pasha was arrested, but declined to disclose any details about the charges brought against him.

A source in police said the DB team left Sylhet for Dhaka immediately after arresting Shahinur Pasha at night.

He is accused in more than one lawsuit over the violence Islamist hardliner Hefazat carried out in 2013, the source added.

Shahinur Pasha has been arrested amid the ongoing countrywide crackdown against the Hefazat leaders since the violence and arson attack occurred

at different places of the country in March.

In 2005, he was elected MP in the Sunamganj 3 by-election after the death of Awami League leader and former foreign minister Abdus Samad Azad. Back then, Awami League did not participate in the by-election.

Shahinur Pasha, however, contested the general elections in 2008 and 2018 as a candidate of four-party alliance and Jatiya Oikyafront respectively, but lost both the elections.
