Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested five people, who peddled Yaba tablets in the guise of Bedes (gypsies), from Mohammadpur in the capital.

They were the members of a drug peddling gang.

The arrestees are identified as Tariqul Islam, 23, Mohammad Sinbad, 23, Mohammad Mim Mia, 22, Mohammad Emon, 19, and Mohammad Monir, 28.

A team of the RAB-2 held them from Basila area in Mohammadpur around 11:20pm on Tuesday.

The elite force seized 77,000 Yaba pills from their possession. They also seized dresses, ornaments and other things, which real Bedes wear and use, from them.

Lt Col Imran Ullah Sarker, commanding officer (CO) of the RAB-2, briefed journalists on the matter at the RAB media centre in Kawran Bazar on Wednesday afternoon.

During primary interrogation, the arrestees said they carried Yaba pills in a special part of a cooking woven, the officer said.

They brought Yabas from Cox’s Bazar to the capital via Chattogram, Feni, Noakhali, Chandpur and Munshiganj.

They used mini roads and paths of villages to reach the capital to evade arrest. They travelled by easy bikes, rickshaws and autos.
