Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Wednesday said they would take steps to close shopping malls if health guidelines are violated in city markets.

“If health guidelines are not followed strictly, we will shut the shopping malls. We don’t want to close any markets before Eid but we have to be strict when there is violation of rules,” DNCC Mayor Atiqul said.

He made the statements while speaking to reporters after visiting Gulshan-1 DCC Market.

He said, “Shop owners have given an undertaking to ensure health guidelines but it is absent in reality. We have information that many iftar parties are being organized in a number of five-star hotels in the capital and the authorities have requested us not to stop it. We will not listen to them and stop the activities.”

During the visit, the mayor urged shops owners and market-goers to wear face masks and stick to rules and regulations.
