Anti-tobacco activists formed a virtual human chain on Wednesday demanding steps to raise tax on tobacco products in order to save lives and earn additional revenue.
Around 100 anti-tobacco activists took part in the event on social networking site Facebook to press home their demand, said a press release.They also posted their pictures with various anti-tobacco slogans on the social media using a hashtag #raisetaxsavelives.
The government should increase tax on tobacco products so that they become unaffordable for young generation and people with lower income, they said.
Chairman of Shastho Shurokkha Foundation and Bangladesh Parliamentary Forum for Health and Well Being Prof Dr Habibe Millat MP, Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Research of National Heart Foundation Professor Sohel Reza Choudhury and Unnayan Shamannay’s Chairman and former governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr. Atiur Rahman addressed the programme.
Prominent journalists, members of parliament, economists and physicians also participated in the event.
Anti-tobacco advocacy organisations like Dhaka Ahsania Mission, VOICE, National Heart Foundation, Shastho Shurokkha Foundation, Unnayan Shamannay, DORP and Progga jointly arranged the event with the technical support of ‘Tobacco Free We’.
