A fire broke out again in Daser Bharani area of the Sharankhola Range of Sundarbans East Forest Division on Wednesday.

Earlier on Monday a fire broke out in the same place where the authorities concerned claimed to have doused the fire on Tuesday after a 30-hour frantic effort.

The forest department and the Sharankhola fire service came to know the fire incident on Wednesday morning and responded quickly to take necessary measures for extinguishing the fire.

Md Golam Sarwar, deputy assistant director of Bagerhat Fire Service and Civil Defence, said, “Scattered smoke was spotted in some areas of compartment No. 24 in Sundarbans in the morning. Fire was not visible until Wednesday afternoon. Since then Three fire service units of Sharankhola, Morrelganj and Bagerhat Sadar have been working to extinguish the fire.”

“Smoke is coming out from different areas. In such situation, sprinkling water is the only way of dousing fire. We are doing it,” he said.

“There is no source of water nearby. We have installed 25 water pipes to bring water from Bhola River. Hopefully, we would be able to extinguish the fire very soon,” the fire service officials added.

“The firefighters, forest officials and local people have been trying to douse the fire. Sundarbans forest rangers and officials are at the scene of the fire,” said Mohammad Belayet Hossain,

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Sundarbans East Forest Department.

Forest officials said the fire broke out due to natural causes with dry leaves and high temperatures in the forest.

Earlier, on Monday evening, the Forest Department formed a three-member investigation committee headed by assistant forest conservator of the Sharankhola Range, Joynal Abedin, to detect the origin of fire and submit a report within the next seven days.

Sharankhola Station Officer Abdul Mannan and Dhansagar Station Officer Md Faridul Islam are assisting him as the member of the committee.
