Banking hours extended to 2pm

Banks to remain open May 10, 13

Bangladesh Bank (BB) has extended the banking hours from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm from today (May 6) during the lockdown period.

Banks will operate till 3.30 pm to complete

post-transaction internal activities.         

As per the central bank’s earlier directive, banks remained open from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm for customers and operated until 2.30 pm to complete post-transaction ancillary activities.

The central bank also made it mandatory for banks’ officials and employees to stay at their duty stations during the Eid Holidays. Bank branches located in readymade garments industrial areas and relevant department of respected banks’ headquarter have to be kept open on May 10 and 13 (if Eid is held on May 14), for the convenience of paying the workers’ salaries.

The department of Off-Site Supervision of BB issued a circular in this regard on Wednesday.

Non-bank financial institutions will also remain open from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm from May 6, mainlining health guidelines.

According to the BB notification, banks will remain open from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm except for weekly holidays and government holidays to ensure smooth banking services for the customers.

“Branches of the scheduled banks located near garments industrial areas in Dhaka city, Tongi, Gazipur, Savar, Bhaluka, Narayanganj and Chattogram will remain open to facilitate the payment of salaries, bonuses and other allowances to workers and employees of the garment industry ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr,” said the BB circular issued on Wednesday.

Banks have also been asked to take adequate security at bank branches in coordination with the local administrations.

The BB instruction also asked banks to ensure uninterrupted internet banking services and keep adequate banknotes at ATM booths with ensuring health protection and sanitization measures.

During the lockdown period, the head office, Authorized Dealers (ADs), local principal office, banks’ main branch in every district headquarter, banks’ single branch in every two kilometres in city corporation areas (if there is no AD) have to be kept open.

Besides, a branch of each bank at upazila level will remain open on Thursday, Sunday and Tuesday in one day interval. Banks will have to arrange transportation of their staff during the lockdown period or pay actual transport fare.

Banks that have online facilities for cash deposits and withdrawals will ensure the overall convenience of customer transactions.

At the same time, banks operating within the two kilometres of the City Corporation and District Headquarters can conduct banking activities through internal coordination from a convenient branch (excluding the authorized dealer branch) to ensure customer service.
