Experts at a roundtable have urged the government to raise social awareness about thalassemia to combat the infection of the family-oriented disease apart from diagnosis of blood before marriage.
Bangla daily Kaler Kantho in association with Beacon Pharmaceuticals organised the virtual roundtable titled ‘Thalassemia: Awareness is the prevention’ on Monday.Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services Prof Dr Khurshid Alam joined the event as the chief guest while Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Vice-Chancellor Dr Sharfuddin Ahmed spoke at the meeting as the guest of honour.
Kaler Kantho Editor Imdadul Haq Milan delivered the address of welcome while Beacon Pharma Managing Director Obaidul Karim spoke in the meeting.
Prof Khurshid Alam said the government is working together with the private sector to raise awareness on thalassemia.
Among others, cricketer Habibul Bashar Sumon, Kazi Ashraf Hossain alias Ghotok Pakhi Bhai, Family Planning Department Director Dr Mohammad Sharif, Directorate General of Health Services Director Dr Robed Amin, BSMMU Medicine Faculty Dean Masuda Begum, among others, spoke in the meeting.
