The High Court has cleared the way for elections for the posts of president and two vice-presidents of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) slated for May 5.

A division bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir passed the order on Sunday.

The order followed a petition filed by the election board of FBCCI which prayed for discharge of the rule.

On April 20, the HC issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why FBCCI election shall not be halted considering the Covid-19 pandemic.

Amir Uddin Dipu, a member of the General Body of the FBCCI, filed the writ petition with the HC questioning validity of the election process amid the pandemic.

Talking to the Daily Sun, Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque, counsel for election board of FBCCI, said all 78 directors have been elected without polls as other candidates stood aside.

The HC discharged its rule on the ground that May 5 elections will be for the posts of president and vice-president only and will see no crowd, he said.
