Transport workers staged demonstrations in the capital and elsewhere in the country on Sunday to press home their demand including the resumption of public transport maintaining health protocols.
In Dhaka, transport workers gathered in Gabtali, Sayedabad, Mohakhali and Gulistan bus terminals as part of the processions. They marched with banners and festoons containing their demands.A total of 249 transport workers’ unions across the country, including the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation, are carrying out the agitation programme.
Hundreds of workers and transport leaders staged a protest in front of the capital’s Gabtoli bus terminal. Transport workers led by Dhaka District Workers Union staged a procession in and around Gabtali after the protest.
Transport workers also brought out a procession under the banner of Dhaka Metropolitan Road Transport Workers in the city’s Sayedabad area to press home their 3-point demand.
A demonstration was held in front of Mohakhali Bus Terminal under the banner of Dhaka District Bus-Mini Bus Road Transport Workers Union.
In Rajshahi, Transport workers stage protests to allow movement of public transports and long-distance buses.
Transport workers brought out a procession at Shiroil bus terminal in Rajshahi at around 11:30 am. The procession marched different roads and ended at the bus terminal area.Mahatab Hossain, general secretary of Rajshahi Motor Workers Union, said around 20,000 transport workers of Rajshahi and their families are suffering from income loss caused due to the ban on the movement of public transport.
Lamenting that markets are open across the country despite lockdown, he demanded to allow public transport provided that they maintain all health protocols.
In Kurigram, bus and minibus workers staged a protest procession on Sunday noon demanding resumption of public transport and access to food aid.
The workers gathered in the Shapla Chattar area by blocking the road.
Addressing the rally, workers leaders said workers are living an inhuman life due to the closure of public transport during the lockdown.
They demanded resumption of public transport and food assistance for the workers to help them survive the hardship.
In Magura, transport workers staged a protest procession in front of the District Motor Workers Transport Union office.
A protest procession was brought out in front of the Motor Workers Union Transport in the Kitchen market area of Magura town on Sunday. The procession marched Dhaka Road, Chowranga Junction and Vaina area and ended in front of the Motor Workers Union office.
Earlier on Saturday, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the government was considering the resumption of public transport services ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. The minister also urged transport owners and workers not to resort to protests over the issue.
“Be patient,” he told the aggrieved public transport owners and workers.
Public transport services were suspended in Bangladesh on April 5, when the government announced a countrywide lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19.
