Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said no Hefazat or BNP leader was arrested except offenders.

“No innocent Hefazat-e-Islam or BNP leader was arrested. Only criminals were nabbed. Not the Alem-Ulema but those who were directly involved in arsons were arrested after scrutinising video footage,” he said.

Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, made the statement while addressing a virtual view-exchange meeting with Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority officials of Chattogram zones from his official residence on parliament premises in the capital.

The AL spokesperson alleged that BNP was creating myths of the arrest of those involved in terrorist activities.

“No Hefazat or BNP leader was arrested. The culprits were arrested on specific allegations after scrutinizing video footages,” he said.

Through the statements and speeches, BNP is making evil efforts to save terrorists who resorted mayhem across the country including Dhaka, Hathazari and Brahmanbaria by making cooked up stories, he also alleged.

Mentioning that BNP will have to wait as there is no alternative of elections, Quader said the days of assuming power by carrying out August 15, November 3 and August 21 carnages, and so-called November 7 are over.

Talking over collecting coronavirus vaccines, the minister called upon all to keep confidence in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“There is no shortage of goodwill and sincerity on the part of the government in collecting vaccines,” he said, adding that those who are spreading propaganda about the vaccine are actually thinking that Bangladesh should not get the vaccine.

The roots of BNP politics are not deep on the soil of Bangladesh, but elsewhere, the minister added.
