Nationwide Boro paddy procurement begins

The government has started the procurement of Boro paddy directly from farmers at Tk 27 per kg across the country.

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder inaugurated the countrywide Boro paddy procurement programme through a videoconference from Dhaka on Wednesday.

Districts administration’s higher officials, food department officials, farmers representative and mill owner of nine districts –Netrakona and Kishoreganj of Dhaka division, Naogaon and Bogura of Rajshahi division,

Dinajpur of Rangpur division and Sylhet Sadar, Habiganj, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj of Sylhet division- joined him virtually, said a press release of the ministry.  The minister asked the officials and staff to collect paddy and expedite food storage maintaining health guidelines. The government has decided to procure 1.15 million metric tonnes of rice (boiled and non-boiled) and 0.65 million metric tonnes of paddy during the current Boro season.

Some 1 million metric tonnes of boiled rice will be procured at Tk 40 per kg, 0.15 million metric tonnes of non-boiled (atap) rice at Tk 39 per kg, and 0.65 million metric tonnes of paddy at Tk 27 per kg.
