The Appellate Division of Supreme Court on Sunday upheld the High Court order that granted bail to Erfan Selim, son of Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Salim, in a case filed on charges of assaulting a navy officer last year.

A full bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after rejecting a petition filed by the state challenging High Court bail to Erfan Selim.

Erfan’s lawyer Syed Ahmed Raza said there is no legal bar to releasing Erfan.

Earlier on March 18, the High Court granted permanent bail to Erfan following his bail petition.

On October 25, 2020, Bangladesh Navy’s Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan filed a case at Dhanmondi Police Station, naming four people including Erfan on charges of assaulting him and verbally abusing his wife.
