A six-member Bangladesh chess team, including five grandmasters and an international master, will take part in the upcoming Asian Continental (Hybrid) Chess Championship 2021 on May 21-30.

The players are - GM Niaz Murshed, GM Ziaur Rahman, GM Reefat Bin Sattar, GM Mollah Abdullah Al-Rakib, GM Enamul Hossain and IM Fahad Rahman.

According to a new Asian Chess Federation rule, players must require a FIDE Rating of 2300 points or above before May 1 to compete in the meet and all the Bangladeshi six players met the criteria.

“We have sent invitations to all six players rated 2300 or above. Niaz and Fahad have already confirmed and others will do so soon. We will send the list to ACF before the last date on April 28,” BCF General Secretary Syed Shahab Uddin Shamim told The Daily Sun.

Meanwhile, Shamim said Niaz will also represent Bangladesh in the World Cup.

“According to the new rules by FIDE, a top player from the first 100 countries will directly make an entry in the World Cup while others will have to play qualifiers. Niaz is champion of our zone 3.2 and he will play directly there,” he said.

BCF will also arrange a World cup Qualifier on June 1-9 in Dhaka and the champion of the event will play in the World Cup.

“There are six teams in zone 3.2 -- Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The other five members are weaker than us. So we have a great chance to send two players to the World Cup,” Shamim added.
