The development work of multi-storied housing complex with modern facilities is underway for the cleaners of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in Gabtali area of the capital.

After completion of the development work, some 784 families of the cleaners will get their cherished flats. The work is likely to be completed by December, 2023.

Each flat will have two bedrooms, a kitchen and a toilet. Cleaners are now living in various shanties in the capital.

DNCC sources said they started constructing four 15-storied buildings for housing and a four-storied school building for providing education facilities to the children of cleaners on four acres of land in Gabtali.

Talking to the Daily Sun, project director and also executive engineer of zone-4 of DNCC Shahidul Islam said each dwelling unit in the buildings will have all modern facilities.

He said, “We are constructing four 15-storied buildings. In three of the buildings, each floor has 16 dwelling units while in one building, each floor accommodates eight dwelling units.”

“Each dwelling unit will have two bed rooms, one kitchen, one toilet and bathroom along with water, electricity and lift facilities for the families of the cleaners. We are also thinking about introducing primary and secondary level education system in the school,” Shahidul also said.

“We have already completed 20 percent of the total development work as basement and some other works of all buildings have been completed. We hope we can complete the development work by December 2023,” He said they would revise the project as they cannot complete the work by this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the budget would be revised to Tk 250 crore from Tk 221 crore.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam said, “City cleaners have no decent housing facilities and they are living in unhygienic places for years. Our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed me to ensure modern housing facilities for them.”

“Today the buildings for the housing of the cleaners are visible for 784 cleaners. Gradually, we will build the same type of modern buildings for housing the rest of the cleaners of DNCC,” he added.
