A mentally unstable man hurled acid at five members of his family and also himself following an altercation in the capital’s Lalbagh area Tuesday morning.

He is identified as Ali Hossain, 40, while five family members are his mother Momena Begum, 70, two brothers -- Anwar Hossain, 52, and Iqbal Hossain, 45, sister Jamila Akter, 30, and nephew Salehin, 20.

All of them were whisked off to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. Later, Jamila, Iqbal and Salehin were shifted to National Institute of Ophthalmology, as they sustained burns in their eyes.

Anowar Sattar, inspector at National Emergency Service 999, said that a certain person from House 15 at Kashmitola Lane called 999 and informed them of the acid attack at about 4:30 am.

The matter was then informed to the Lalbagh police.

KM Ashraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Lalbagh Police Station, told the Daily Sun that a team of police led by Sub-Inspector Faysal Ahmed was sent to the spot.

The policemen sent in injured to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. Ali Hossain is in critical condition while the rest are out of danger.

He said, “Ali is mentally ill. He may be called mad.”

When asked how he collected the acid, the police officer said that there was a battery in their residence. It seems he threw the acid of the battery, said the OC, adding that they are looking into it to find out details about the incident.
