The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has set up a 200-bed Covid-19 unit at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in the capital to provide treatment for coronavirus-infected patients with their number growing in the country day by day.

“Of the total three wards, treatment for Covid-19 patients has already started in a ward at our hospital,” Prof Dr Mir Jamal Uddin, NICVD director, told the Daily Sun on Monday.

He also said there are six intensive care unit (ICU) beds at the unit dedicated for Covid-19 patients.

The DGHS sources said as part of the government’s initiative to increase beds for Covid-19 patients, it is setting up Covid-19 units at different specialised hospitals, including NICVD, National Institute of Ophthalmology & Hospital and National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), in the capital.

Meanwhile, the government has recently opened a 1,200-bed Covid-19 hospital at Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) market in Mohakhali.
