Justice sought by a forlorn daughter

The heart wrenching grief-stricken face of a daughter, whose father was forced to take his own life under duress, is enough to touch the heart of any person with feelings. The plea of Mubasshira Jahan Chowdhury, the sixth grader daughter of recently deceased banker Abdul Morshed Chowdhury of Chattogram, seeking justice for her father is sufficient to pull at the heart strings of even the brazen stranger.

The suicide of Abdul Morshed Chowdhury has brought to the fore the gory face of corrupt local politics, which is eating away at the reputation of our politics and society just like termites and dimming the numerous golden achievements of the government in power. If the prevailing situation is left untreated, then such corrupt termites will devour all that is still good in the politics and society of Bangladesh.

The existing scenario of local politics in Bangladesh is not unknown to most of us, but it is sad that it took the untimely death of Morshed Chowdhury to create a stir of some sort. If this tragedy is not enough to shake us out of the stupor we have fallen into of accepting injustices around us, then nothing else will. Exemplary steps must be taken to cleanse the local level politics to prevent any other Morsheds taking their life to avoid extortion.

The likes of Shamsul Haque Chowdhury and his son Nazmul Haque Chowdhury Sharun must be removed from power politics at the local as well as national level to enable the country to have a spick and span image in the world. The image of politics gets tarnished due to such political rogues in the eyes of the people. It is unacceptable that a lawmaker from the ruling party should be implicated in murky illegal and unlawful activities, defaming the party in the hearts and minds of the people.

The Father of the Nation’s daughter being at the helm of the nation raises our expectation for accountability, transparency and rule of law by manifold. At any given situation, time and again the nation and the people have turned to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as our only hope for justice and fairness. Those who profess to follow the principles of Bangabandhu cannot undo the tireless work of his daughter to create a developed and progressive Bangladesh.
