Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday demanded immediate release of leaders and activists of the opposition party and leaders of religious organisations.
“Crackdown is being carried out amid lockdown. BNP leaders and activists are being arrested. On the other hand, religious leaders are also being arrested indiscriminately and innumerable false cases have been filed against them,” he said. The BNP secretary general made the statement while addressing a virtual press briefing.
“I call for the immediate withdrawal of all these cases and the immediate release of the religious leaders and also the unconditional release of the arrested BNP leaders and activists,” he said.
Fakhrul also warned that the country’s religion-loving people will not accept the harassment of the religious leaders. He claimed that the BNP has no connection with Hefajat-e-Islam and termed it as religious organisation.
Mentioning the clash of Hefajat in the capital on March 26, Mirza Fakhrul alleged that police along with ruling Awami League men carried out attack on ‘peaceful’ demonstration of the Islamic organisation.
“We protested and staged demonstration in protest against killing people without any reason,” he said. Meanwhile, a meeting of the party’s standing committee held on Saturday protested against the killing of five people during a clash between police and workers at coal-fired power plant in Banshkhali of Chattogram.
