Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Monday revoked the licenses of 122 outsourcing companies providing call centre services.
Of the total 122 companies, 105 firms did not have the validity of their registration certificate and 17 firms missed the license renewal deadline, according to a notification of BTRC published on Monday.The call centre business without a valid license is a punishable offence according to the BTRC Act-2001.
Bangladesh Association of Call Centre and Outsourcing (BACCO) represents the companies in business process outsourcing (BPO) in the country.
According to the trade body’s data, some 10 companies out of 122 firms are running the business. There are many renowned companies including – Augmedix, StarTech, Daraz Bangladesh, Wintel Limited, Unitech BPO Service etc.
“Many companies have taken call centre license. But they have no operations for a long while. Some 10 companies missed the deadline for license renewal. They will file appeals to the telecom regulator as per rules,” Towhid Hossain, general secretary of Bacco, told the Daily Sun.
BPO is a method of subcontracting various business-related operations in back-office management mostly executed via technology-based platforms.
According to official data, some 170 firms created employment for 15,000 people in the BPO sector.
