The ongoing countrywide lockdown has been extended for another week to curb the spread of deadly coronavirus as deaths and infections from the pathogen continue to rise.

The government has decided to enforce another spell of strict lockdown in the country from April 22, State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossian said.

The ongoing complete eight-day lockdown, which is scheduled to end on April 21, will now continue till April 28.

“The fresh lockdown will be effective from April 22. It’ll be a stricter one,” Farhad added.

A secretary-level meeting on Monday discussed the country’s corona situation and enforcing fresh spell of lockdown. The summary of the meeting has been sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and a gazette will be issued once it gets her approval, the state minister said.

About the nature of the upcoming lockdown, the state minister for public administration said this spell of lockdown will be enforced strictly to curb corona infections.

“We hope that corona infection rate will come down after the lockdown,” he added.

Earlier, the government enforced the ongoing complete lockdown from April 14 in view of the sharp rise in corona deaths and infections after a relaxed lockdown which started on April 5.

According to Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS) more than one lakh people were infected with coronavirus till April 19 and deaths crossed 10000-mark. With the death of 112 new corona patients on Monday, the country witnessed over 100 deaths for the fourth time in a row.

During a virtual press briefing, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the government is mulling over extending the lockdown for one more week.

“The government is actively considering extending the ongoing lockdown as per the suggestions made by the health experts,” he added.

About the withdrawal of the restrictions, Quader said the upcoming lockdown could be relaxed for homebound people ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr festival.

Meanwhile, National Technical Advisory Committee for Covid-19 recommended that the ongoing lockdown be extended for one more week as there is still no improvement in the country’s corona situation.

Although corona cases continue to rise alarmingly since late March, the government imposed a ‘relaxed’ countrywide lockdown for one week from April 5.

The government allowed resumption of public transport in city corporation areas from April 7 as well as reopening shops and shopping malls for five days from April 9 in the face of protests against the lockdown.

Later, the government was compelled to enforce a complete weeklong lockdown in the country from April 14.
