Even the sky does not seem to be the limit of Patiya’s Shamsul Haque Chowdhury and his family members’ despotic power and unquenchable thirst for wealth. Thanks to media reports, people are already aware of the unlawful activities of these persons. Actually, there is hardly an arena where Chowdhury and his legion of ruthless son, brothers, sisters, nephew and the likes have not extended their poisonous tentacles. They have established a dark kingdom and a reign of terror all over Patiya. The strong crime trend of these persons has simply become unstoppable.
Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, a people’s representative from Chattogram-12 (Patiya) constituency and a whip of the national parliament used his political power not for serving the interest of the people but misused it for amassing immense treasure. Chowdhury’s arrogant son has accumulated immense wealth from different secret illegal business. He allegedly forced a banker to commit suicide recently. The members of his family control everything from tender submission to supplying all sorts of construction material for public development projects. They even did not hesitate to grab the land of a century old mosque. His constituency is just a hunting ground for him. The reality is such that none dare to protest Chowdhury’s unrestricted whims.Shamsul Haque Chowdhury is an influential parliament member. Under a democratic polity he is expected to act democratically and give priority to people’s interest. But he is not a modern democratic politician by nature; he is actually a despot of medieval character, acting arbitrarily according to his sweet will. He has caused much harm to modern day politics; persons like him are responsible for people’s detest for politics and politicians and the latter’s isolation from the masses.
Shamsul Haque Chowdhury belongs organisationally, if not ideologically, to a political party built and led by none other than the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and nurtured by his worthy daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The activities of Chowdhury and persons like him caused irreparable damage to the great image of this historic organisation. The challenge before AL president Sheikh Hasina, millions of sincere party activists and torch bearers of Bangabandhu’s ideals is no less than preserving the prestige that AL still enjoys among the masses. It is high time that undesirable elements like Shamsul Haque Chowdhury were removed from Bangabandhu’s dream organisation.
