Stand by needy people during lockdown

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday said the government has taken various initiatives to save impoverished and unemployed people during the lockdown period and coronavirus pandemic.

Food assistance would be given to 12.5 million people during the lockdown while 3.6 million poverty-stricken families will get financial assistance as Eid gift from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said.

Quader, also the Awami League (AL) general secretary, said this while addressing a virtual press conference from his official residence on parliament premises in the capital.

The minister came up with the remarks as the country’s coronavirus situation is worsening due to the growing number of deaths. With the 102 deaths on Sunday, Bangladesh witnessed over hundred fatalities for a third successive day, taking the death toll to 10,385.

The minister called upon people of all social strata irrespective of political affiliation to stand by poor people.

He urged the political parties to stop criticizing blindly and playing blame game over Covid-19 crisis, as the country is losing precious lives every day.

“Everyone should be careful to curb infection and stick to hygiene rules,” he said.

Slamming Secretary General of Bangladesh Nationalist Party Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Quader urged him to establish democracy in his party before talking about the country’s democracy.
