Ex-DUCSU social welfare secretary Akhtar sent to jail

A Dhaka Court on Saturday sent Akhtar Hossain, social welfare secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and president of the DU branch of the Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, to jail for his alleged involvement in snatching away an accused from police custody while receiving treatment in Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital, reports BSS.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Mahmuda Akhter turned down the bail petition and ordered to send him to jail when Akhtar was produced before the Court on Saturday after a two-day remand.

The investigating officer pleaded to send him to jail till completion of the investigation. On the other hand, his defense lawyer filed a bail petition.

On April 14, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid granted him two-day remand.

Earlier, he was arrested from Shahbagh police station area on Tuesday night.

The prosecution story is in brief that Chhatro O Jubo Odhikar Parishad staged a demonstration at Motijheel on March 25 protesting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh.

As the students and Police were locked in a series of clashes police arrested a man named Abul Kalam Azad.

When the detainee was taken to Dhaka Medical College for treatment, the Chhatro O Jubo Odhikar Parishad activists snatched him from the police custody and fled away with the arrestee.

Paltan Model Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Raihan Kabir filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station on the same day.

A total of 19 people including Akhtar were implicated in the case.

Other accused of the case are Acting Convener of Chhatro Odhikar Parishad Rashed Khan, Joint Convener Faruk Hasan, Former President of DU Branch Bin Yamin Mollah, Current President and Former Social Services Secretary of DUCSU Akhtar Hossain, General Secretary of DU Branch Akram Hossain, Central Joint Convener Mashiur Rahman and convener of Jubo Odhikar Parishad Ataullah Sohrab.
