2 top Hefazat leaders held

Police arrested two top leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam from capital on Saturday.

Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested Maulana Jalaluddin Ahmad, Assistant Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam from Mohammadpur area in the capital.

He is also the Joint Secretary General of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish.

DB Additional Commissioner AKM Hafiz Akhtar said Maulana Jalaluddin Ahmad was arrested from his house at Mohammadpur at around 2:00pm.

He has been arrested in a case filed in 2013 for sabotage at Shapla Chattar. Besides, he has also been implicated in recent violence at Baitul Mukarram on March 26, 2021, said the police officer.

He will be produced in court with remand prayer, he added.

In another incident police arrested Maulana Zunayed Al Habib, president of Hefazat-e-Islam’s Dhaka Metropolitan Unit, from a madrasa in Baridhara in the capital, confirmed Mahbub Alam, joint commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

He is wanted in several cases for carrying out mayhem at Motijheel in the city in 2013, the officer said.

With the arrest of Jalaluddin and Habib, seven central leaders and about 100 activists of the organisation were arrested.

However, the top accused, Hefazat-e-Islam’s joint secretary general Mamunul Haque, is still absconding.
