Hefazat leader Razi, two others remanded

A Dhaka court on Thursday placed three people, including Hefazat-e-Islam central assistant secretary general Mufti Shakhawat Hossain Raji, on a five-day remand in a case filed over vandalism and arson attack on vehicles during a protest in 2013.

The two others Hefazat's activists are Mufti Fakhrul Islam and Mufti Manjurul Islam.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan passed the order after police produced the Hefazat men before the court seeking a ten-day remand. A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Mufti Shakhawat Hossain Razi and two others from Lalbagh in the capital on Wednesday evening in connection with the case filed with Paltan Police Station.

According to the case, the leaders and activists of Hefazat-e-Islam laid a siege to capital’s Motijheel Shapla Chattar area on May 5, 2013.

In the name of blockade, Hefazat workers vandalised and set fire to vehicles in different areas of the capital including Motijheel, Paltan and Arambagh with sticks, sharp weapons and firearms.
