Bangla Academy chairman Shamsuzzaman Khan laid to rest

Bangla Academy chairman Shamsuzzaman Khan was buried at his family graveyard in Singair Upazila’s Chari village in Manikganj on Wednesday afternoon.

The veteran researcher and literary editor breathed his last around 2:00pm on the day at the age of 81 while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.

Two weeks ago he was tested coronavirus positive and put on life support since April 11 as his health condition deteriorated.

He left behind his wife, three daughters and a host of relatives to mourn his death.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed their profound shock and sorrow at the death of Shamsuzzaman Khan. In separate messages they prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

He succeeded National Professor Anisuzzaman, who served as President of Bangla Academy from 2012 till his demise in May last year.

Shamsuzzaman Khan was born on December 29, 1940 in Chari village in Singair Upazila under Manikganj district.

Shamsuzzaman Khan was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2001, Ekushey Padak in 2009 and Independence Day Award in 2017.
