Corona fear grows in BNP

The coronavirus situation has been creating worry among BNP leaders as their chairperson Khaleda Zia and over 5,000 party leaders and activists across the country have been infected with the deadly virus and over 400 party men died of Covid-19.

“Our party (BNP) chairperson and a large number of leaders and activists have been infected with coronavirus while many also died. We have formed committees to monitor the overall situation and the party also has taken initiatives to ensure treatment and other necessary assistance for the affected party men,” BNP standing committee member Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku told the Daily Sun.

BNP sources said the party is now in inverted condition due to the coronavirus situation as most of the senior leaders have been staying isolated for long and carrying out party activities virtually.

The death of a number of leaders has also pushed BNP into a crisis and finally, the party men have become worried as its chairperson Khaleda Zia has been tested Covid-19 positive, sources said.

Talking to the Daily Sun, BNP organizing secretary Syed Emran Saleh Prince said the party has formed central monitoring committee headed by Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku to monitor the coronavirus situation within the party.

Some front and associate organizations of the party including the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) and Ziaur Rahman Foundation have been working to provide

necessary treatment and other assistance to the party men affected by coronavirus, he said.

Mentioning that the party is updating information about the number of coronavirus affected leaders and activists across the country, Prince said the party has already called the party men to maintain health guidelines to stay safe from the coronavirus and to provide necessary assistance to people.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said Khaleda Zia has tested Covid-19 positive. “She is now in a stable condition and doing well. She has no body temperature and other symptoms. Her treatment has already started under the supervision of her physicians,” he said.

Along with the BNP chief, eight members of her personal staff including her domestic help Fatema, who stay at her Feroza residence in Gulshan, have also been infected with coronavirus, Khaleda’s personal physician Dr Mamun said.

BNP sources said Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of Khaleda’s elder son Tarique Rahman, who has been staying in London with her husband since 2008, is monitoring the treatment of Khaleda Zia.

Khaleda’s physicians said all facilities like a hospital has been kept at her residence and an ICU (Intensive Care Unit) cabin at a private hospital has been kept ready to shift her if necessary anytime.

A team of physicians led by respiratory medicine expert Prof Dr FM Siddiqui on Monday visited Khaleda Zia at her residence Firoza and evaluated her health condition.

After visiting Khaleda Zia, FM Siddiqui told reporters in the afternoon that “Her (Khaleda Zia’s) health condition is very stable now. If another week passes in such a way then she might be out of danger. We are monitoring her condition intensively and reviewing her condition every night.”

“During our visit to the BNP chief’s residence, some other specialist physicians from Bangladesh, UK and US also joined though video conference,” he informed, adding “Zubaida Rahman is motivating the treatment as we are working as a team for her treatment.”

“She (Khaleda Zia) sought prayers from the countrymen for her and urged all to remain alert and maintain the health guidelines (to resist the coronavirus),” FM Siddiqui said.

BNP leaders and activists on Monday observed special prayers at different mosques, temples across the country including in Dhaka seeking immediate recovery of Khaleda Zia.

In the wake of an alarming condition of the coronavirus pandemic, BNP postponed all organizational activities of the party till the upcoming Eid as the party is limited within the virtual programme currently.

Earlier, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said over 400 leaders and activists of BNP have died of coronavirus across the country while around 5,000 have been infected with the virus.

BNP sources said over a hundred leaders and activists of the party are now undergoing treatment with severe coronavirus infection across the country.

BNP leaders including Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Selima Rahman, Ahmed Azam Khan, Gazi Majharul Anwar, Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas and Dr AKM Azizul Haque are now undergoing treatment with the coronavirus infection.

On the other hand, the party leaders including Moudud Ahmed, Ruhul Alam Chowdhury, Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf, Ahsan Ullah Hassan, Abdul Awal Khan and Khandaker Ahad Ahmed died of Covid-19.

BNP insiders said the party which has been staying outside power for around a decade, has been affected by the pandemic for the last one year while it has lost many of its dedicated leaders and activists and it also can’t carry out organizational activities.

Talking to the Daily Sun, some leaders and activists in grassroots level said many poor leaders and activists who have been infected with coronavirus has been passing miserable life as the party leaders are not looking after them in their helpless condition.
