Dhaka University (DU) authorities will not permit anyone to hold Mangal Shobhajatra on its campus on Wednesday considering the ongoing Covid-19 situation across the country.

However, various masks and symbols of Mangal Shobhajatra made by students of Faculty of Fine Arts of the university will be broadcast on TVs, confirmed a DU press release on Monday. In addition, fairs, cultural programmes and public gatherings will not be allowed on the campus this year.

The university authorities have sought cooperation from all in this regard.

In 1989, the students of Faculty of Fine Arts organised a colourful procession titled ‘Mangal Shobhajatra’ — literally meaning wellbeing procession — on Pahela Baishakh. Now, it has become an integral part of Pahela Baishakh, the biggest celebration of secular Bengali culture.

Mangal Shobhajatra features various animal-shaped carnival floats, large colourful masks, replicas of birds, butterflies, traditional dolls and other motifs of Bangladeshi culture that highlights the traditional folklore of Bangladesh.
