Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister Tazul Islam on Monday directed the engineers under the ministry to continue the ongoing development work amid the countrywide lockdown maintaining the health guidelines.

He also urged the officials not to leave the work stations and get out of residences except in an emergency.

The minister gave the directions while speaking at a virtual meeting with the field-level officials under Local Government Engineering Department and Local Government Division.

“The construction works can continue maintaining social distancing. The continuation of the development work is essential because it is important for the rural development. People’s livelihoods are also concerned with the process,” he said.

Tazul said quality of the construction works must be maintained and those who will be found involved in substandard work will have to face legal action.

“If complaint of low-quality work is made against any official and the allegation is proved, we will file departmental as well as criminal case against the offender. If negligence of any contractor is found, they will also be punished,” said the minister.

“For construction of road and bridges, we have to take the project on priority basis. We will not construct any road and bridge randomly. If we need to ensure navigation of water bodies for construction of bridges, we will have to ensure it through hydrological and morphological studies before taking a project,” he added.

Tazul also urged the officials concerned to complete development projects of the government in time and asked them to complete project proposal, invitation of tender and evaluation accurately for saving time.
