The death toll from the launch capsize in the Shitalakshya River in Narayanganj has risen to 34 with the recovery of five more bodies on Tuesday.
The five victims were identified as Rizvi Ahmed, Tanvir, Akash, Mohammad Sohagh and Kazi Yunus.The bodies were seen floating in Kolyghat area of the river in Bandar upazila. Later, the firefighters recovered those.
The launch, ‘MV Sabit Al Hasan’, sank in the river near the 3rd Shitalakshya Bridge at Koylaghat of Syedpur after being hit by sand-carrying bulkhead “SKL-3’ on Sunday evening.
Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, told the Daily Sun that they recovered 29 bodies on Monday and five more on Tuesday morning.
“With the latest recovery of the bodies, we’ve concluded the rescue operation as there’s no missing person as per the list made based on information provided by family members and relatives of the passengers of the sunken launch,” he said.
Wishing not to be named, an employee of Narayanganj FSCD’s Zone-1 told the Daily Sun that the probe bodies formed over the incident visited the spot on Tuesday.
“They may hold a mass hearing on the bank of the river about the launch capsize on April 8,” he said.Shahidul Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Narayanganj Sadar River Police Station, told the Daily Sun that the bodies were handed over to their family members and relatives.
The district administration provided Tk 25,000 for each deceased’s family as the funeral cost, he said.
In response to a query as to whether the master of the bulkhead has been identified, he said Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority will file a case in this regard. “After the filing of the case, we’ll launch investigation and identify the master of bulkhead ‘SKL-3,” he said.
Sub-inspector Jahirul Islam, duty officer at Narayanganj Sadar River Police Station, told the Daily Sun in the afternoon that the process was underway to file a case over the launch capsize.
