Faruque set to become BGMEA president

Giant Group Managing Director Faruque Hassan is going to be the next president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

The Sammilita Parishad, led by Faruque Hassan, won the BGMEA biennial election, bagging 24 posts out of 35, while the ABM Shamsuddin-led Forum panel won 11 posts.

A total of 1,996, out of 2314, voters cast votes at the voting centres in Dhaka and Chittagong on Sunday.

Around 86 percent of votes were cast in the election to the apex platform for garment makers.

Faruque Hassan got the highest number of 1,204 votes.

The BGMEA election board, led by Syed Farhat Anwar, announced the election results on Sunday night after the day-long voting.

According to BGMEA sources, the winning directors will elect president andseven vice-presidents on April 16. Then, the new BGMEA board will take over charge on April 20 for the next two years.

In an instant reaction, Faruque Hassan has congratulated all BGMEA members for voting him to make its president.

Vowing to build a united BGMEA for all, he said they will face the challenges ahead altogether and help the sector to grow.

“We will be able to address the challenges the sector has been facing from the fallouts of the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

The new leaders also said they will work closely with the government and the European Union to retain duty-free market access in the region up to 2031, after the LDC graduation in 2026. It is possible through apparel diplomacy.

“My vision is to ensure that BGMEA becomes an organisation that prioritises service delivery for its members, where its members can receive them without any hassle,” he added.

In a reaction, BGMEA incumbent president Dr Rubana Huq congratulated the newly elected president and vowed to cooperate with him on the development of the industry.
