Fargana Hoque made an unbeaten 72 off 100 deliveries to power Bangladesh women’s emerging team to a 54-run win over their South African counterpart in the five-match one-day series opener at the Sylhet International Stadium on Sunday.
Fargana received a compliment from Murshida Khatun (36) and Sharmin Sultana (34) as the hosts posted 195-9 after being asked to bat first. Off-spinner Jane Winster was the pick of the South African bowlers, finishing with 3-32.
Opener Andrie Steyn top-scored with a dogged 41 off 83 but all the remaining batters failed to get into the 20s. In reply, the South African side looked on their way to win the match, reaching 90-2 in 27 overs. But the Bangladesh spinner tightened the screws, snapped up wickets in regular succession to give the hosts a comfortable win in the end. The second match will take place on Tuesday at the same venue.
