People on Saturday started buying essential products excessively after a cabinet minister hinted at possible lockdown from Monday to curb corona virus surge.

They are mainly buying rice, potato, onion, garlic and other food items so that they don’t face any problem during lockdown period, if the supply runs short in markets.

Consumers are rushing to the nearby markets to buy their essential goods hugely.

Jahangir, a trader from Malibagh area, said that the grocery markets experienced increasing sale after the news of lockdown on Saturday.

Karwan Bazar, one of the largest marketplaces in the country, also saw overwhelming crowd as customers from different areas of the capital are buying their desired goods.

Shopkeeper Rubel Miah said a section of businessmen have started hoarding essential goods ahead of Ramadan.

“We have plenty of essential products. If the customers’ behavior remains normal, there is no chance of price hike,” he said.
