Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday to foster cooperation on sustainable energy.

SREDA Secretary Niaz Rahman and BGMEA Secretary Commodore Mohammad Abdur Razzak signed the agreement virtually on behalf of their respective organisations.

The MoU will pave the way for long-term collaboration between SREDA and BGMEA in a range of activities including capacity development of BGMEA member factories on energy efficiency and renewable energy.

It will facilitate easy access to information on implementation of rooftop solar projects, help garment industry to get low-cost green finance and support joint promotion of industries working towards sustainability, among other benefits.

Dr. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Energy Adviser to Prime Minister, attended the event as chief guest while State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid and Principal Secretary Dr. Ahmad Kaikaus joined as special guests.

The event was also attended by SREDA Chairman Mohammad Alauddin, BGMEA President Dr. Rubana Huq, Senior Vice-President Faisal Samad and Country Director of GIZ Bangladesh Dr. Angelika Fleddermann.

SREDA chairman said the business entities “are integral to the sustainable energy development.”  “This cooperation with BGMEA is, therefore, a milestone

in strengthening partnership and collaboration in building a sustainable future,” said SREDA chairman.”

Dr. Rubana Huq said, “We are heading towards a future that would demand sustainability to be upheld at the core of any business. Undoubtedly, energy is to remain at the centre of such development.”

“In light of that, this MoU particularly announces expectations and aspirations for the future partnership between BGMEA and SREDA,” she added.

On behalf of the Bangladesh government, SREDA promotes renewable energy and energy efficiency, and works on creating an enabling environment for sustainable energy development in the country.

BGMEA, the apex body representing the readymade garment industry in Bangladesh, constantly aspires to ensure sustainability for its member factories through supporting them in enhancing competitiveness, including the sustainable use of energy and resource efficiency.
