Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday directed the authorities concerned to take tough measures against those who are charging extra bus fares from passengers.

“Stern action will be taken against those who are breaching instructions,” he said while addressing a virtual press conference at his official residence on parliament premises in the capital.

Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, directed Bangladesh Road Transport and Authority (BRTA) and law enforcement agencies to stick to the rules.

Earlier on Monday, the minister urged bus owners to carry passengers half of their capacity with a 60 percent fare hike in the wake of a surge in coronavirus cases.

The minister also said that bus fares were adjusted for the sake of public interest.

But many are violating the decision and taking extra fares, he said.

“All have to be careful so that the public transport does not become a source of coronavirus infection,” he said.

About Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Quader alleged that BNP has been making evil efforts to create anarchy across the country with the help of communal and anti-liberation forces.

“No one can assume power by making evil attempt. Pro-people political activity has to be carried out to go to power,” said the general secretary.
