BGMEA election panel Forum has pledged to develop a sustainable readymade garment industry in Bangladesh.

The Forum leaders announced its election manifesto at a press conference at a hotel in Dhaka on Tuesday.

BGMEA president Dr. Rubana Huq and Forum panel leader A.B.M. Shamsuddin, among other RMG industry leaders, were present at the event.

The Forum leaders said the garment industry would face a myriad of problems and obstacles during the next two years.

To face these obstacles, the BGMEA would need an effective board comprising trustworthy, dutiful, hardworking and experienced individuals, the leaders said.

They said Forum is presenting a council, which, if elected, would seek to create a sustainable industry.

Forum’s core manifesto has 13 parts. They include topics related with image, reducing operational cost and business facilitation, SME, sick industry, an exit policy, price and buyers’ accountability, protection and efficiency, market expansion, technological efficiency, LDC graduation, skill and innovation, sustainability and SDG, labour welfare and cleaner and efficient BGMEA.

If elected, the Forum vowed to review the directors’ performance every three months towards a cleaner and efficient BGMEA board.

The Forum would also consider reorganizing the BUFT trustee council, the leaders said, adding that a discussion group composed of broad industry would be created.

According to the Forum, BGMEA has many achievements in the last two years and many more in progress.

They said the manifesto would be a roadmap to sustainability of the industry and has plans that could be implemented.
