Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has announced a nationwide demonstration for March 29 and 30 protesting against the killing of five people on Friday, the day when the golden jubilee of the country’s independence was observed.

He made the announcement at a press conference at the party’s Gulshan office in the capital Saturday afternoon.

Fakhrul said the party will take out protest processions and hold rallies in cities across the country on March 29 and at district level on March 30.

He said five people were killed while many were injured during the protest against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Dhaka.

Fakhrul said BNP’s associate bodies — Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal — staged protests all over the country on Saturday to protest against the killing incident.

But police and ruling Awami League men carried out attacks on leaders and activists of the associate bodies during their protests while law enforcers arrested many of the party leaders and activists from demonstrations, he added.

The BNP secretary general said Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal have also announced countrywide demonstration for today in protest against the attacks on them and arrest of the leaders and activists.

He said killing of four people in Hathajari of Chattogram and one in Brahmanbaria and injuring several hundreds during the protest is a dark chapter of the nation.

“The government’s fascist character has been revealed again through this killing. They want to prolong their stay in power by using state machinery,” Mirza Fakhrul said.

Asked whether they have support for Hefajat-e-Islam’s hartal programme, he said, “Every person or organisation has the constitutional right to express opinion. If any organization announces programme like hartal, it is logical.”
