The Board of Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has decided not to hike the water tariff right now due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision was taken from a meeting of the WASA Board held on Tuesday with its Chairman Dr Engineer Golam Mostafa in the chair.

Earlier, WASA proposed that the water tariff be raised by 5 per cent for both commercial and residential users in the capital for what it said adjustment with inflation.

Talking to the Daily Sun, Golam Mostafa said they rejected the proposal for hiking the water tariff considering the coronavirus

situation and people’s economic condition.

“We’ve decided not to raise the tariff right now due to the Covid-19 situation. If the situation improves before June, we’ll sit again to take a decision in this regard,” he said.

WASA proposed that the tariff of each unit of water be fixed at Tk 15.18 for residential use and Tk 42 for commercial use against Tk 14.46 and Tk 40 respectively.
