An employee of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS) allegedly committed suicide by setting himself on fire at his workplace early Saturday.

The deceased, Azizul Islam Milon, 30, worked as a receptionist at the institute. His body was kept at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsy, said Inspector Bacchu Mia, in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost.

However, the reason behind the death could not be ascertained immediately, he added.

Dr Partha Shanker, residential surgeon of the institute, said physically-challenged Milon set himself on fire inside a toilet of the institute at about 1:15am.

Later, other employees rushed him to the Intensive Care Unite (ICU) of the hospital where he breathed his last.

Milon was appointed as an assistant of the institute reception section on daily wage basis.
