The ground for Bangladesh’s present economic success was created by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said Wednesday.

Bangabandhu’s efforts to reshape the war-ravaged country’s economy and his steps towards population control and human development actually paved the way for future development, he recalled.

“Bangladesh is now a role model of development in the world. The country people now take pride in expressing themselves. It has turned into a developing nation with the bold leadership of Sheikh Hasina, the successor of Bangabandhu,” Kamal remarked.

“The foundation of this historic achievement or modern Bangladesh had been laid by Bangabandhu,” he added.

He made the remarks while virtually joining a discussion in Nangolkot, Cumilla organized marking the 101st birth anniversary of Bangabandhu, says a finance ministry release.

The nine-month Liberation War left the country’s transport and power systems nearly fully damaged, also putting the economy close to a halt, the finance minister said.

“Bangabandhu could understand that the produced food won’t reach people because of supply chain disruption while industrial production and education would be seriously hampered, if these two systems are not resumed,” he pointed out.

Besides, he gave the highest subsidy on food, intensified population control campaign and streamlined educational institutions while stressing on starting new technical and medical education institutions, he listed.

Bangabandhu wanted that no country people left homeless. So, he focused more on building new houses, rehabilitating old ones for the war affected people, he noted.

Only in 3.5 years, he had implemented a number of schemes for power, agriculture and cooperatives, industry and science, house building, economy and trade management, industry nationalization, education and culture, technology, and land management to bring smile into people’s face, reminded Kamal.
