CHATTOGRAM: Customs officials seized huge cigarettes imported under false declaration of paper at Chattogram port on Monday.

Sources said ‘JK Stationary’ of the city’s Panchlaish area announced to import A-4 size paper from the UAE.

A vessel ‘MV X-Press Nuptse’ carrying the product reached the Chattogram port from the UAE on February 4 this year.

But, the concerned C&F agent didn’t take any step for delivery of the product.

As a result, the officials of Customs Audit, Investigation and Research (AIR) Wing started examining the product on Monday.

They found 49.98 lakh pieces of cigarette of different brands brought tactfully in 24,990 cartons with the paper.

Some 13.7 tonnes of A-4 size paper were also found in the consignment during the drive.

The importer attempted to dodge revenue of around Tk 12 crore through the false declaration, said the Customs Assistant Commissioner Rezaul Karim.

Legal actions will be taken against the persons involved with the attempt to dodge the revenue, he added.
