The High Court on Monday asked why SK Sur Chowdhury, former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank, and its Executive Director Shah Alam had not been arrested yet for assisting Proshanta Kumar Halder, widely known as PK Halder, in embezzling and laundering a huge amount of public money.

The HC asked the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to either arrest SK Sur Chowdhury and Md Shah Alam or clear them of corruption charges after an investigation.

A bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim came up with the observation during a hearing on a suo moto (voluntary) rule.

The court asked the ACC to submit a report on April 6 explaining what action has been taken against SK Sur Chowdhury and Shah Alam for their suspected link with Halder, who is wanted in several loan scams and money-laundering cases.

During the hearing, ACC’s lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told the HC that Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) is examining the bank statements of SK Sur Chowdhury and Shah Alam.
