Hasina, Modi inaugurate ‘Maitri Setu’ today

New Delhi: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi will inaugurate 'Maitri Setu’ (friendship bridge) over the Feni river today.

The bridge will establish highway connection between two neighbouring countries at Tripura point of India.

With the inauguration of the bridge, Tripura will become a gateway to the northeastern states of India and will connect Chattogram Port of Bangladesh.

Narendra Modi will join the inauguration of ‘Maitri Setu’ at 12:00pm through videoconferencing, the Indian Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement.

Hasina and Modi were supposed to inaugurate 'Maitri Setu' during the latter’s upcoming visit to Dhaka. The inauguration of the bridge is taking place earlier at the request of Modi.

The name ‘Maitri Setu’ symbolises growing bilateral and friendly relations between two next-door neighbours, the PMO said.

‘Maitri Setu’ will facilitate movement of goods and passengers between the two countries, provide new market opportunities for products of northeaster states of India.

The bridge is set to create a new chapter in bilateral trade and people-to-people contact between India and Bangladesh, the PMO said

The bridge project involving Rs 133 crore was taken up by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. The 1.9-km bridge connects Sabroom of India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh.

Apart from Maitri Setu, Modi will inaugurate a series of infrastructure projects in Tripura. The projects are integrated command and control centers which will enable Agartala to identify potential and challenges by using digital technology.

Modi will also inaugurate Agartala-Udaipur upgraded national highway aimed to ensure access to northeastern states of India. He will also lay foundation stone of integrated check-post of Sabroom in India which is important for connecting Tripura with Bangladesh.

The Indian premier will also lay the foundation stone of National Highway (NH)-208 connecting the Unakoti district headquarters at Kailashahar with the Khowai district headquarters.

It will be an alternative route to the NH-44. The 80km NH-208 project has been initiated by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd at a cost of Rs 1,078 crore.

Modi will also inaugurate state highways and other district roads, developed by the state government with a financial outlay of Rs 63.75 crore, the PMO statement said.

He will also inaugurate 40,978 houses constructed under ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban)’ completed with the financial outlay of Rs 813 crore.
