At least 20 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of a municipality mayor, also a mayoral aspirant, and mayor aspirant in Brahmanbaria’s Kasba upazila on Friday during a programme making distribution of smart NID cards.

A number of motorcycles and local establishments were also vandalised during the clash which continued intermittently, starting from Kasba upazila parishad premises at around 11.00am.

Eyewitness said the supporters of Kasba Municipality Mayor Emran Uddin Jewel and Kasba Upazila Jubo League President MA Aziz gathered in front of the upazila parishad office on the occasion of the arrival of Law Minister Anisul Huq in the morning.

Both Jewel and Aziz are hoping for Awami League’s nomination in the upcoming Kasba municipality mayoral elections. At one stage, their supporters engaged in a clash over establishing supremacy but it stopped after a while. Later, at around 11:30am, the law minister came to the upazila parishad office to attend the pre-arranged event.

But, the clash broke out again during the ceremony in presence of the minister, and continued intermittently.

The law minister immediately left the venue for his village home Paniarup in Kasba. Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Kasba Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Hossain said, “Additional police forces have been deployed to avoid further incident.”
