CHATTOGRAM: A case was filed accusing four persons, including the Chattogram Central jail superintendent, for allegedly attempting to kill an accused through torturing and poisonous injection in jail on Thursday.

The victim’s wife Jharna Rani Deb Nath filed the case with the court of Chattogram Metropolitan and Session Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman, said the plaintiff’s lawyer Rajib Das.

Other accused of the case are Chattogram Central Jail’s jailor, assistant surgeon of prison hospital and Ratan Bhattachariya, the plaintiff of the case filed against the accused Rupam Kanti Nath, said the lawyer.

The court took the allegations into cognisance and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate into the matter, he said.

They also submitted another petition to the court to ensure security of the plaintiff Jharna and her husband Rupam, the lawyer added.

Rupam is now undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital under the custody of jail authority.

According to the FIR, the plaintiff’s husband Rupam Kanti Nath was sent to jail on December 15 last year following a case filed by Ratan over monetary transaction.

The accused including the jail super in cooperation with each other tortured Rupam with electric shock and pushed poisonous injection to kill him in jail, alleged the plaintiff.

Earlier, plaintiff Jharna lodged the same complaint with the court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Hossain Mohammad Reza on March 1.

Later, the court asked to lodge the complaint with the proper court.

However, the court of Shekh Ashfaqur Rahman granted bail to Rupam considering his physical condition in the case filed by Ratan on Wednesday.

The court cancelled the bail on Thursday as Rupam’s lawyer could not submit the required documents in time.
