Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Vice-Chancellor Prof Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah on Thursday rejected a probe report made by University Grants Commission (UGC) and blamed education minister for conducting investigation into the allegations against him.

He said UGC prepared a biased and fabricated report on his corruption allegations, being patronised and influenced by Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni.

Prof Kalimullah made the remarks at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital.

He said, “I, without any hesitation, state that Education Minister Dipu Moni, out of personal dislike to me, forced the UGC to prepare the fabricated and biased report.”

“UGC member Muhammad Alamgir, who led the investigation team, is from Chandpur and served the purpose of the minister by making me a scapegoat for graft done by the previous vice-chancellor,” he said.

“Probably, I am a victim of the local politics of Cumilla-Chandpur,” he claimed.

Kalimullah also raised a question on the integrity of UGC. He also sought Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s intervention in this regard.

Earlier, a probe committee, formed by UGC, found the involvement of Prof Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah in multiple irregularities in the construction of Sheikh Hasina Hall and Dr Wazed Research and Training Institute at BRUR.

Meanwhile, terming the statements made by BRUR VC Prof Kalimullah intentional, untrue, fabricated, and baseless ones, the education ministry said the ministry had directed UGC to submit a probe report regarding allegations of irregularities at BRUR following rules.

In a statement signed by education ministry’s spokesperson M Abul Khair said the UGC followed all the procedures during carrying out the probe into the allegations and sent the report to the education ministry.

“UGC is an autonomous body. So there is no scope of any kind of influence from the ministry or the education minister at any stage of this process,” it said

Rejecting the statement of Professor Kalimullah, education ministry also said the BRUR VC has made some personal attacks on Education Minister, which is completely unexpected.

On the other hand, hours after the press conference of the VC, Bangabandhu Parishd, an organisation of teachers at BRUR, arranged a press conference in Rangpur and declared VC Prof Kalimullah ‘unwanted’ on the university campus.

The teachers’ organisation has also alleged that the VC is making false allegations and making negative remarks about the important person of the state, including the education minister.

At the press conference, Bangbandhu Parishad’s general secretary Mashiur Rahman leveled various allegations against Prof Kalimullah saying that he is making false allegations as the UGC submit probe report accusing him over corruption.
