4 UPDF men arrested with arms, ammo

Security forces in Chattogram Hill Tracts district of Khagrachhari arrested four members of United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF), Prasit faction, with firearms and ammunition on Tuesday.

They were arrested from Banchhara (Fresh Bazar) area of Dighinala upazila in the early hours, according to intelligence sources.

The detainees were identified as Prottoy Chakma alias Dr Preeti, 42, Bidhu Bhushan Chakma alias Anik, 51, Samar Bikas Chakma alias Bhalo Chakma, 36, and Purna Jibon Chakma alias Chikkul Chakma, 42.

Two foreign pistols, 40 rounds of ammunition, 10 mobile phones, four receipt books used for extortion, Tk 5.74 lakh collected through extortion and some documents of their party were recovered from their possession.

On the basis of intelligence information, an army patrol team of Dighinala Zone conducted the operation in Banchhara (Fresh Bazar) area that UPDF activists were organising and distributing extortion money.

During the drive, they arrested the four UPDF (Prasit faction) members from the spot.

Locals identified them as local activists of the UPDF led by Prasit Bikash Khisa.

During preliminary interrogation, they confessed to their involvement in realising extortion.

The detainees and all the recovered weapons were handed over to Dighinala Police Station.
