CHATTOGRAM: A former union parishad (UP) chairman was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants at his residence at Satkania upazila in the district early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Hoque, 90, former chairman of Keuchia UP under the upazila.

He was also the founding president of Awami League Keuchia union unit.

Sources said miscreants hacked Hoque to death at his residence in the Keuchia area at around 3:00am.

Officer in-Charge (OC) Md Anwar Hossain of Satkania Police Station said on receiving information, they inspected the spot and recovered the body at around 10:00am. The body bore injury marks on his head, neck, hand and eye and it was sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue, added the OC.

Additional Superintendent of Police Jakaria Rahman of Satkania Circle said Hoque used to live at his residence with a caretaker as his family members stay at Chattogram city.

Miscreants might have killed him over family conflict as the former UP chairman was not active in politics. They detained the caretaker for interrogation, Jakaria said.

However, the cause behind the murder would be ascertained after investigation and drive was going on to arrest the criminal, he added.
