Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday said that attack on police using Jatiya Press Club (JPC) premises is unexpected.

“Press Club is a national organisation; it is for journalists and a neutral institution. It is open for all irrespective of political belief and opinion. It is unexpected if any attack on police carried out from the JPC,” he said.

Hasan, also the joint general secretary of the Awami League, said this while talking to reporters at his secretariat office in the capital.

The minister came up with the remark as over 50 people, including policemen and a journalist, were injured in a series of clashes between activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and police in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Sunday.

The minister said that JCD carried out the attack on police by using JPC as a shield.

“I went to JPC frequently but never seen any hip of stone there. But JCD hurled stone and brickbats on police,” he said.

Talking over writer Mushtaq Ahmed’s death in custody, Hasan said JCD wants to catch fish in the troubled water.

“JCD want to create an incident in the country. A vested quarter is trying to catch fish in the troubled water centring the unexpected death of Mushtaq,” he said.

Terming the death of Mushtaq as unfortunate, the Al spokesperson said a probe committee has already been formed to unearth the exact facts.
